Getting your ribbon artwork print-ready is the single most important step in ensuring your custom printed ribbons match your brand's exact specifications. A poorly prepared file can lead to blurry prints, color shifts, or repeat mismatches — costing both time and money.
The gold standard for ribbon printing is Adobe Illustrator (AI) with vectors converted to outlines. This ensures your design stays crisp at any scale. PDF (print-ready, high-resolution) is also acceptable.
Avoid low-resolution JPGs or PNGs for production artwork. If you must use raster files (for photographic designs), deliver at 600 DPI minimum at actual print size.
For ribbon widths 25–50mm: 300 DPI minimum at print size.
For widths over 50mm with fine details (logos, small text): 600 DPI.
Never scale up artwork — always design at 100% print size.
Add 5mm bleed on all sides. For continuous repeat patterns, extend artwork by 1–2 full pattern repeats beyond trim marks. The repeat unit must align perfectly at seam edges.
Confirm the repeat length with your manufacturer. Common repeat lengths: 3m, 5m, 10m, 20m. Seasonal ribbons typically use 3–5m; retail packaging ribbons use 10m.
Use a calibrated monitor (Spyder or X-Rite) set to gamma 2.2 and D65 color temperature. Request your manufacturer's ICC color profile and soft-proof in Photoshop or Illustrator before sending files. Always print a color chip chart for bulk production approval.
Download the print-ready artwork checklist as a PDF from your manufacturer or request one with your quote. At Smith Ribbon, we review every artwork submission before production to catch issues early — at no extra cost.
Our pre-press team reviews all artwork submissions and will flag any issues (low resolution, missing bleed, color mode concerns) before production begins. We offer free color swatch matching and digital proofs for all custom printed ribbon orders.
